The Lower House in Burundi has passed a law to halt proliferation of churches in the country. Passage of the law is coming just about a year after a survey showed that there are 557 churches in Burundi.

We gathered that some of the churches account for few members and are springing up almost in every space within the city in a country of about 10.8 million people.

The new regulation requires churches to have at least 500 members and a proper building.

The bill, which has received unanimous support in the lower house is likely to scale through in the Senate before it will be accented to by President Pierre Nkurunzuza within 30 days.

Once signed into law, churches would have a year to comply with the new regulations, while those intending to register any church will have to show that they have a follower-ship of at least 500 people.
