At least five vehicles were burnt and one person injured Wednesday morning when a tanker conveying Premium Motor Spirit(PMS) plunged into a sharp object at Mobil Petrol Station at Oba-Akaran, Ikeja, Lagos, emptying its content on the road and surrounding area.
We gathered that the fire incident started around 6:05AM when the tanker was trying to meander through a number of vehicles waiting on the queue to purchase fuel from the petrol station.
The incident engendered traffic gridlock in Ikeja, Ogba and Agege, forcing most commuters to walk the long distance to their destination.
Director, Lagos State Fire Service, Mr. Rasak Fadipe told reporters that the incident occurred when the tanker was navigating through vehicles parked on the entrance to the petrol station.
“The fire spread and burnt five vehicles and several electric poles. One of the burning pole fell on a man and wounded him serious, as he was taken to the hospital by the Lagos State Ambulance Services. We are advising Lagosians not to crowd around scenes of fire disasters for safety purpose,” he said.
Fadipe said his men rushed to the scene with five fire trucks, each carrying about 10,000 litres of water from Ilupeju, Ikeja, Agege and Isolo to curtain the ravaging fire. Meanwhile, properties worth millions of Naira were on Tuesday destroyed as the Generator House of the Christ Embassy Church on Oregun Road was gutted by fire.
“The Christ Embassy fire outbreak involved the generator room with 14 diesel driven generators, a lot of diesel and PMS storage tanks, the power house with many cables and many big AC compressor machines,” Fadipe said were all razed by the fire.
