R & B crooner, Bankole Wellington, better known as Banky W wants existing radio stations in Nigeria to go digital to be able to keep accurate record of airtime allotted to any music to ease payment of royalties.

The musician expressed his views at a forum put together by the Nigerian Broadcasting Commission (NBC) in Lagos.

He said no radio station in Nigeria has been able to provide accurate log of airtime allotted to each of the music they play.

“So, there are a lot of fights going on to get radio stations to be accountable; provide the logs, pay the royalties, pay the tariffs and so on. In Nigeria majority of our stations are not even computerised.

“You go to a radio station and the DJ brings his laptop, uses his auxiliary cable, plugs it into the system and plays the music from his laptop. So that radio station can never give you a log. This is part of what we have told the NBC to help us enforce on the radio stations. For any station to renew its license, it has to become fully digital, it has to become fully accountable. It makes the job harder for COSON because if there are no logs, who are you going to pay the money to?

“How do you know how much is due for a D’banj? How much is due for Wizkid? How much is due for those who have a hit song in Kaduna, or Sokoto or in the east? Without those logs and without accountability and without this entire process of being digital it is a nightmare”, he said.
