Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola has emphasized the need for Deoxyribonucleic Acid(DNA) laboratories and forensic laboratories in Nigeria to ease the process of solving domestic violence such as rape and other related issues.
Fashola who made the observation while speaking on television as part of activities to mark the New Year said lack of these facilities makes it difficult to prove cases of rape and related issues against the accused in the court of law.
“So you need semen samples, you need medical records. We have no DNA labs and we don’t have forensic labs”, he said.
Fashola said government has built a transit home for women who are being abused adding that oftentimes it is the men who are the aggressors even though there have been few cases of women aggressors.
“Oftentimes the traditional story is that the women and children are thrown out into the streets. And we said look, law alone cannot do it. So we built a transit home that I describe as a port of safety for the vehicle of life. So when women fall victim of such situation, we have the capacity in Alimosho to take them in. We provide bed and board; there are medical facilities and teachers. So during the time while we are trying to resettle them the children’s education goes unhindered, medical issues are dealt with and so on and so forth”, the governor said.
“We now have a Special Needs Home for those types of children in Ketu. We have finished the first phase and we are on the second phase. So children with Down’s Syndrome and all of that are being managed in that home”, he said.
He re-emphasized the need for State Police in the country arguing that even if they were used for the protection of the more vulnerable members of society, like women and children, the venture would be justifiable.
