First satellite cable television provider in Nigeria, Multichoice, owners of Digital Satellite Television, DStv is 20. Management of the organisation celebrated this feat at an elaborate ceremony in Lagos thanking viewers for sticking to the brand all these 20 years.
Multichoice lunched into the Nigerian market in 1994 with a collection of over 40 television and audio channels, now over hundred.

It started with a modest office in Lagos but has today made its present felt in every state of the federation.

Unlike from the humble beginning, the company has grown from strength to strength, opening up its bouquet to local television and radio stations, thus assisting them to reach out to more Nigerians.

It has also paid attention to the yearnings of Nigerians through introduction of various bouquets, premium, compact, compact plus, family and access bouquet. Beyond this, timely introduction of channels, broadcasting local movies and premiership soon made it the first choice in Nigerian homes. It went a step further to introduce GOTV as part of effort to deliver services into every home.

It has in addition demonstrated remarkable achievement in the area of corporate social responsibility through provision of ICT based materials for schools throughout the federation to simplify the process of learning in schools.

Till date, Multichoice has a core business value to provide world class subscription management services to Nigerian DStv subscribers.

We went to town to sample the views of Nigerians using DStv on the operation of Multichoice in Nigeria in the past 20 years.

I will say Multichoice has brought in the technology of paid service for our comfort, despite the exploitation in the business, we kept on patronising them. I think it is right time we Nigerians look inward, to try as much as possible to participate in that business, because when you look at it, it is like they are monopolizing that aspect of that sector, we need our millionaires to invest in that area so that there will be at least competitive services.

I will congratulate them on the 20 years of surviving the Nigerian business economy. They have a very good programme, but there is room for them to still reduce the cost of their subscription and still make it affordable. They still need to do more. They have been trying to do some other things to bring more Nigerians on board. But they still need to do more.

When you compare them to other cable company, i think they are doing well. They are still the foremost cable company in Nigeria, but it can be better, in the sense that they need to do more on the signal because when ever it rains, it makes nonsense of the programme. They need to work on the decoder, in the sense that if you don’t have Universal Power System(UPS), and the channel goes off, it takes some time for it to booth and by that time you would have lost whatever you are watching on TV, whereas decoders of other cable companies come on once there is light, without booting for a very long time. I think they should work on these two areas. Leave those two things apart, they are still the best in terms of programming.

Their programming content is still the best, they give us live programme, they have alot of children programmes and live matches, which most Nigerians are catching on to make more more money through viewing centres. By and large, they are doing well, but it can be better.
