There were indications on Wednesday that the five months old strike in the nations’ universities will soon be called off following the Memorandum of Understanding(MoU) signed by representatives of the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities(ASUU).
Speaking after the meeting, ASUU president Dr. Fagge Isa said the union would meet on the new development.
Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education, Dr MacJohn Nwaobila signed in behalf of the Federal Government while Fagge signed for the union.
Those present at the ceremony were President, Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Mr. Abdulwaheed Umar and five Vice Chancellors including that of the University of Port Harcourt, Ibadan and Kano as well as the Executive Secretary of National Universities Commission (NUC), Prof Julius Okojie and the former Executive Secretary of Tertiary Education Trust Fund Professor Yakubu.
Minister of Education, Nyesom Wike described the occasion as historic adding that it is the happiest day in his tenure as the supervising minister of education.
“All contending issues have been resolved to the satisfaction of both parties, we are partners in progress and there is no victor no vanquish as our struggle is in the interest of the country, Wike said”.
