The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has said that it is not happy about the lack of internal democracy in registered political parties in the country. INEC commissioner in charge of Logistics, Dr. Nuru Yakubu who made the observation said that refusal of some political parties to allow democracy to operate within its ranks will make it difficult for the nation to get to its democratic destination.
While calling on political parties in the country to allow free reign of democracy within its fold, he noted that ongoing restructuring of INEC will make it possible for it to be able to conduct free, fair and credible polls in 2015, adding that his organization is fine-tuningthe electoral process to make it easy for participants to accept results of the elections.
“We are introducing changes, reforming the system and incrementally improving the process. We will continue to improve the nation’s electoral processes so that the 2015 elections will be the best in Nigeria,” he said, adding that the commission would remain impartial so as to enhance credibility of the elections. Nuru explained that INEC will not give undue advantage to any party but that it will continue to provide a level playing ground for all the political parties in all polls in the country.
“INEC has no candidate or any political party but will only declare the candidates with the highest number of votes in any poll,” he said adding that the his organization has embarked on sensitisation campaign to reduce voter apathy in the country.
