CROSS RIVER, Nigeria, June 13, 2016 – Not less than 10 people have been killed in the last three days as cultists unleash mayhem in Cross Rivers State, killing and maiming all within reach.
The situation which has been very routine is leaving many vulnerable in Calabar South, even as the State Governor, Mr. Ben Ayade seems to have been overwhelmed by the development, leaving the cultists to have the upper hand.
An eye witness reported that one person was brutally hacked down at Palm Street, by Main Avenue on Wednesday and that innocent people were killed at Orok Orok Lane, Umoh Orok by Effiom Edem Mount Zion Road, Ekpo Abasi, Jeb Lane, Mbukpa, Ene Ita, Iman, Edibe Dibe Road all in Calabar.
We gathered that two people were killed in Watt Market including three students of Cross Rivers University of Science and Technology. One of our sources in the University of Calabar warned people to desist from traveling into Calabar by night.
“I myself am tired of running up and down every night”, the helpless student said. An eye witness to some of the killings said that one of the cultists could not be overpowered even after several hot leads were pumped into him until the assailant resulted to the use of axe.
“He was shot several times but the bullets did not penetrate and axe was used on him. If they come for their rival and the innocent one is there then you are in for it”, she said to paint the tales of horror currently rocking Cross Rivers State. She added that many people now live in fear in a state once reputed to be a haven of peace.
Another eye witness said several others were killed in other areas by the cult groups who are bitter with themselves.
Residents are calling on Governor Ben Ayade to rise up to the occasion to enable residents live in peace.
As at the time of filing this report, it is not clear which of the cult groups are involved in the bloodletting exercise.
