The Student Union Government (SUG) of the Lagos State University (LASU) has described as regrettable  statements credited to Special Adviser to the Governor on Education, Mr. Fatai Olukoga that the students were part of the reason for continued closure of the school.

In a statement, Public Relations Officer of SUG, Mr. Adebanjo Fatai said the statement is erroneous and unacceptable adding that it was intended to indict the student union government and turn the students against its leadership.

He said the SUG had approached Olukoga on a number of occasions and that the SA assured them that the university would be reopened but never did.

He called on well-meaning Nigerians to prevail on the Lagos State Governor to open the school for academic activities.

“We therefore call on the civil societies, and the world at large to help us appeal to the State Government to reopen Lagos state University for commencement of  academics and administrative activities and do away with propaganda and incorrect allegations  for the sake of our students populace, for the sake of posterity, for the prolonged recess is already taking its toll on them, especially our various final year students, particularly our final year Law students, who must proceed on a compulsory one year programme at the Nigeria Law school, to allow them meet up with the October Law school calendar”, he said.

THE ERONEOUS ASSERTION ON LASU CRISIS MADE BY THE SA TO THE GOVERNOR ON EDUCATION.

It’s a pitiable dismal abysmal, and regrettably lugubrious that an elderly statesman like the SA to the Governor on Education Otunba Fatai Olukoga can make such erroneous and unacceptable statement against the Students Union of LASU that ” the Union is part of the reason why the citadel is still wallowing in the jacuzi of election recess.

In a respectful manner, this statement by the SA Education is untrue and reckless, for it is capable of inciting our members against the student union Leadership. We can state authoritatively that, this statement was made obviously to indict the Students’ Union of LASU because, the Students’ Union protested against the continued closure of our school.

At this cosmopolitan junction, I deem it pertinent to bring to the humane attention of the outside world, the effort made so far by the Students’ Union during the prolonged occurrence of the crisis in LASU, during and after the declared election recess and how the SA Education deceived us on resumption.

On the 16th of March, 2015 the Staff Unions on campus agitated for their demands by closing down the school gates which concerns the Students’ Union because we were promised by the Staff Unions that it would never affect our academic activities.

As a Union that wanted a lasting solution on the issues on campus, we made a visit to the office of the SA Education on the 20th March, 2015 to consult him on how the issues on our campus can be solved and the gate would be opened. It was then that he told us that, election recess will be declared in our school because they envisaged  pre and post election crisis, and they don’t want the students to be victims of such crisis.

Subsequently, on the 23rd March, 2015, the open ended recess was declared which the Students Union condemned in it totality that why would a recess have no resumption date.

Furthermore, since after the April 11 peaceful election, our school had not been reopened, then we visited the leadership of the University management and the Governing Council countless of time  which never yielded positive change.

We then visited the SA Education again on the 20th April, 2015 to ask him about the closure of the school, and we were told we couldn’t  see him as Monday is their state Exco meeting day, that we should come back another day.

We were there again on the 21st April, 2015 and we met him on his way going home, and he explained to us that they were holding on to our resumption because they haven’t completed our school fees refund.

We therefore told him that we were ready to resume, that they can reopen the school and at the same time continue the payment process.

It was then that the SA Education put a call through the Chairman Governing Council in our presence and he told him that ” please meet and find out modalities on how LASU would be reopened because the students said they want to resume”. We were assured by the SA that by 27th April, 2015 we would surely resume.

We left his office in happiness all because we have been promised that we would resume the following  Monday. We went on social media to inform our students of the new development, and told them to get ready for resumption.

Unfortunately, the school was never reopened on the said Monday, and all we could see on the University site on the 26th April, 2015 was that ” the declared recess is still very much in force”, which shows that the State Govt and the university  are not ready to listen to our yearning.

We then made a peaceful march from Allen junction to the Governor’s Office to submit our position letter to the Governor as the visitor of the school, so that he can do something as the SA Education has failed us totally, by blatantly deceiving  us.

To our greatest surprise, the SA Education took to media yesterday that the students’ union is part of the continued closure in LASU, and that  Students Union was part of those who called for the sack of the vice chancellor.

We held our congress on the 20th March, 2015 which was attended by over 400 students, and the decision of the Congress was that we should not support that the VC must go as that cannot solve the problem, that the VC should stay and complete his tenure.

Then the question arose that ” why would an elderly statesman like Otunba Fatai Olukoga be blowing hot and cold at the same time, he is approbating and reprobating on the same issue.

According to Otunba fatai olukoga,  recess was initially declared for staff and students on campus, to prevent them from being victims of electoral violence, subsequently, it was because of our school fees refund and now it is the Students Union because we protested against the continued closure of our school, from these varying reasons, I’m sure our students and the entire world can deduce, what and who Otunba fatai Olukoga is.

We therefore call on the civil societies, and the world at large to help us appeal to the State Govt to reopen Lagos state University for commencement of  academics and administrative activities and do away with propaganda and incorrect allegations  for the sake of our students populace, for the sake of posterity, for the prolonged recess is already taking its toll on them, especially our various final year students, particularly our final year Law students, who must proceed on a compulsory one year programme at the Nigeria Law school, to allow them meet up with the October Law school calender.

Signed.
