YELLOW SUBMARINE stars Sergi Cardona and Alfon Gonzalez were the toast of Bilbao last night as Villarreal’s high-flyers torpedoed Athletic Club at the San Mamés.
In a clash that sizzled with La Liga quality, Marcelino’s men proved they have the clinical edge to match their Champions League ambitions, securing a massive 1-2 away win that leaves them sitting pretty in third place.
The game ignited in the 26th minute when Sergi Cardona produced a moment of pure magic. After a lightning-fast transition led by the industrious Tani Oluwaseyi, the wing-back timed his run to perfection. Facing the formidable Unai Simón, Cardona kept his cool to dink a delicate chip over the Spanish international—a finish that had the travelling fans in raptures.
While Cardona provided the finesse, Alfon Gonzalez provided the fire. Just as the half-time whistle beckoned, Alfon hounded Athletic defender Inigo Lekue into a horror mistake. Stealing the ball with the tenacity of a street fighter, the winger raced clear and hammered a clinical finish past Simón at the near post to make it 2-0.
The “Lions” of Athletic refused to go down without a roar. Driven forward by the San Mamés faithful, they pinned the Submarine back in a frantic second half. Gorka Guruzeta finally breached the yellow wall in the 84th minute, turning home a brilliant Yuri Berchiche cross to set up a grandstand finish.
Athletic thought they’d snatched a late leveller when Nico Pepe found the net, but the linesman’s flag acted as a heartbreaker, ruling the goal out for offside.
The result moves Villarreal four points clear of Atletico Madrid and a staggering 15 points ahead of Real Betis. For Athletic, the defeat is a bitter pill to swallow as their European hopes fade, but for the Yellow Submarine, the stars are aligning for a seat at Europe’s top table next season.
