Women Unfairly Represented at the Constitutional Conference Says Fashola

First Lady of Lagos State, Mrs. Abimbola Fashola on Thursday criticized what she described as less than 15 percent representation allotted to women at the on-going national conference in Abuja, stressing that it would be for the good of the nation if women were given equal representation like the men at the ongoing national conference.

She made the observation in her address at the 2014 International Women’s Day celebration in Lagos adding that women empowerment leads to economic and all-round growth of nations.

According to her, countries with gender equality are making better progress than those discriminating against women.

“I must state however, that it goes beyond just talking about gender equality; we must make an effort to include women….We need to do better as a nation,” she said adding that it is unfortunate that when a woman rises fast to a certain height, her proficiency in the said field is ignored and various unpalatable and suggestive premises are brought to the fore as the reasons for her successes. We have reached a time when this should not be an issue any more ”she warned.

In her remarks, Deputy Governor of Lagos state, Mrs. Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire said women have always been known to champion struggles for human rights, social justice, universal welfare and equality, adding that women have equally proved themselves as unbeatable in rendering compassionate and selfless service to humanity as mothers of the nation.
