ITALY – A German woman was arrested in northern Italy after she allegedly drove her speeding car into a family in an Italian village near the border with Austria, killing three, the Carabinieri police force from Santo Stefano di Cadore confirmed to dpa on Friday.
Police are investigating as to whether the woman may have been distracted by her phone and therefore lost control of her car.
The family’s grandmother and father died at the scene of the accident and a 2-year-old boy died in a rescue helicopter on the way to hospital, according to Italian media reports.
Some of the victims were thrown metres into the air from the crash, reports said.
The mother was only slightly injured and the grandfather, who was walking a bit further away from the family, was taken to hospital in shock.
The driver was taken into custody on Thursday evening and is accused of multiple homicides in road traffic, a criminal offence in Italy.
Initially, there were different reports on whether the car hit the people on a pavement next to the road or on a zebra crossing.
