AUSTRALIA  – A German woman has been confirmed  dead after crashing her paraglider into a gondola in the Austrian mountains on Sunday morning.

Tyrolean police said the 65-year-old woman took off from the summit of the Hohe Salve mountain near Hopfgarten, some 50 kilometres east of Innsbruck.

While paragliding from the approximately 1,800 metre high mountain, she drifted off course for unknown reasons, her paraglider got caught in the cables of a gondola which was ascending, police said, with the woman crashing into the lift.

Two people in the cabin were slightly injured.

The ropes connecting the woman to the sail crossed the gondola cables. They were then severed by the ascending gondola and the woman free-fell to the ground, according to initial investigations. She died of her injuries.
