WISDOM SAMUEL was the name on everyone’s lips as Rivers United clawed their way back to the top of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) with a gritty 1-0 victory over Plateau United.

In a clash that had all the hallmarks of a title decider, it was Samuel who provided the moment of pure magic in the 11th minute to separate the two heavyweights. The stadium erupted as the “Pride of Rivers” proved they have the stomach for a fight at the business end of the season.

The game was barely ten minutes old when Samuel took center stage. Latching onto a clever ball, the star forward showcased the composure of a veteran, slotting home what would prove to be the winner. It was a goal that didn’t just win a match—it sent a massive statement to the rest of the league.

Plateau United, ever the stubborn guests, didn’t go down without a scrap. They threw everything but the kitchen sink at the Rivers’ defense in the second half, but the home side held firm like a fortress.

The victory catapults Rivers United back to the summit of the NPFL, moving them two points clear of Enugu Rangers, who could only manage a goalless stalemate against Niger Tornadoes.

With only four games left in the campaign, the destiny of the title is firmly in Rivers’ hands. While Plateau United leave empty-handed and staring at a mid-table finish, Rivers United are looking every bit like champions-elect.

”It’s about the three points at this stage,” one local fan shouted over the din of the drums. “Wisdom showed his class today, and that’s why we’re top!”

Rivers United now head into the final stretch with momentum on their side, while Plateau United must regroup before their next outing. But for tonight, Port Harcourt is painted blue!
