WIDOW Chika Ndubuisi was held captive and faced a barbaric ordeal: being forced to drink the water used to wash her dead husband’s body as a cruel ‘innocence test’.
The terrified woman was trapped by her vile kinsmen in Awo-Omamma, Nigeria, after they accused her of causing her husband’s death.
The twisted ritual, described as an “inhuman widowhood practice,” was only halted by the quick-thinking actions of a women’s advocacy group.
They raised the alarm, tipping off local authorities and security agencies who swooped in just in time.
One official, Women Affairs Commissioner Lady Nkechinyere Ugwu, expressed her shock and disgust that such a “barbaric” act could still happen today.
She said the thugs were trying to coerce the widow, already traumatised by the loss of her husband, into the horrifying act.
”Normalcy has been restored, and a detailed investigation is underway,” Lady Ugwu confirmed. “The widow, Mrs Ndubuisi, and her children are under government protection.”
It is understood Mrs Ndubuisi was detained with her late husband’s corpse after the in-laws made the sick accusations.
Authorities, including the Local Council Chairman and NGOs, facilitated the rescue, and police have already made arrests in connection with the appalling incident.
The state governor’s wife, Chioma Uzodinma, has ordered an immediate and comprehensive investigation to ensure those responsible face the full weight of the law.
It’s a miracle Mrs Ndubuisi escaped this hell. We hope the beasts who did this rot behind bars!
