BERLIN – RB Leipzig coach Marco Rose has called for less video assistance referee (VAR) interference in the Bundesliga, after his side’s 2-1 home defeat against Union Berlin amid several reviews.

“I think that in general we are using the VAR in Germany in an inflationary way. I know this differently from other leagues and also perceived it differently at the World Cup,” Rose said.

“We’re not doing the referees on the pitch any favours with it,” he said, adding it appeared that “all we are doing is watch television and constantly switching the channel.”

Saturday’s game had seen three reviews for handball, with one resulting in a penalty, while VAR interference then denied a late Leipzig equalizer for offside in another disputed incident.

Union coach Urs Fischer named it “extremely difficult” to comprehend the handball rules while Rose was critical of the other decision in which the referee said that Berlin’s Aissa Laidouni had played a ball deliberately but in an uncontrolled way with his heel which meant that Leipzig’s Timo Werner remained offside.

“That was a clear wrong decision for me because he didn’t play the ball in an uncontrolled way,” Rose fumed.
