LIVERPOOL — Everton secured a vital three points in the Premier League yesterday, defeating Fulham 2-0 at their magnificent new home, the Hill Dickinson Stadium.
In a performance that saw David Moyes’ men get back on track, the focus was firmly on the electric atmosphere and continued dominance the Blues are establishing at their state-of-the-art waterfront arena.
Goals from midfield enforcer Idrissa Gueye and centre-back Michael Keane proved enough to hand the Toffees their first league win in four games, lifting them clear of the bottom half of the table as the international break beckons.
Waterfront Fortress Taking Shape
While the scoreline itself will be the headline result, the performance, particularly the resolute defensive showing at their new 52,000-seat stadium, is what will delight the home faithful.
Everton’s recent form at the Hill Dickinson Stadium, following an initial stutter, is beginning to cement a reputation for the venue as a genuine fortress.
The Blues have now lost just one of their last eight home games and this clean sheet against Fulham marks their fourth in that impressive run.
The atmosphere was palpable, with the acoustics of the new ground helping the home support create a wall of noise that clearly unsettled Marco Silva’s side.
Offside Frustrations Precede Opener
The home side dominated the first half, though their lead was delayed by some marginal offside calls. Thierno Barry and James Tarkowski both had goals chalked off before Gueye finally broke the deadlock deep into first-half stoppage time.
Following a corner, Tarkowski’s header bounced back off the bar, and after a scuffed attempt by Tim Iroegbunam, the ever-reliable Gueye was on hand to poke the ball home from close range.
Fulham came out with more intent after the break, but their sporadic efforts failed to truly test Jordan Pickford.
The game was sealed in the 81st minute when Michael Keane rose highest to meet a Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall corner, turning the ball in with a combination of his head and shoulder to double the advantage.
The win sees Everton leapfrog their opponents and will send the supporters away happy, confident that their dazzling new home is becoming a very inhospitable place for visiting teams.
