BAMAKO, Mali – Vice President of Mali, Colonel Asimi Goita has eased President of Mali, Mr. Mba Ndaw and Prime Minister, Moctar Quane out of power in a second military coup in nine months.
Vice President Asimi Goita who has assumed the powers of the President and Prime Minister has accused both of them of incompetence following a protracted labour crisis in Mali and that they made cabinet changes with consulting him.
He has also detained the deposed President, Mr. Mba Ndaw, deposed PM, Mr. Moctar Quane and Minister of Defence Souleyman Doucoure in Bamako.
Recall that Colonel Asimi Goita took over power in August 2020 from President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita and then installed Mba Ndaw as President and Moctar Quane as Prime Minister.
In a statement in Bamako, Asimi Goita promised that elections will take place next year as scheduled.
The development has led protest in Bamako, capital of Mali.
