BERLIN – Martina Voss-Tecklenburg’s husband says the departure of his wife as Germany’s women’s coach is somewhat of a relief to him. He is 55-year-old.

She left by mutual consent on Saturday after being on sick leave following the group-stage exit at the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand in August.

“I think Martina first wants to find some calm,” Hermann Tecklenburg, who often speaks on her behalf, told the Bild newspaper on Monday. She leaves with a wink in her eye but also tears. She is happy that the issue is sorted. A weight has been lifted from her.”

Her contract ran until 2025. Before the World Cup disappointment, she had led her side to the runners-up spot in the 2022 Euros.

But squad discontent rose significantly in Australia.

Veteran German Football Federation coach Horst Hrubesch stepped in as interim boss for wins over Wales and Iceland during Voss-Tecklenburg’s sick leave.

A permanent replacement has yet to be announced as Germany try to qualify through the Nations League for the Paris Olympics starting in July.
