THE THEATRE of Dreams became a house of horrors last night as Leeds United didn’t just tickle the dragon—they took its lunch money and left with all three points.
In a Premier League clash that saw the North’s fiercest rivalry reignited under the Monday night lights, it was the visitors from Yorkshire who stood tallest. Noah Okafor was the hero of the hour, netting a sensational brace to secure a 2-1 victory for Leeds, leaving Michael Carrick’s Manchester United stars looking like they’d seen a ghost.
The evening started with a familiar sense of dread for the United faithful. With Marcus Rashford currently plying his trade in Barcelona, the goal-scoring burden fell to Matheus Cunha and Joshua Zirkzee. But while United’s stars flickered, Leeds’ stars burned bright.
The game turned on its head in the first half when United’s “Butcher,” Lisandro Martinez, saw red. A reckless challenge left the referee with no choice but to send the Argentine for an early bath. From that moment on, the Red Devils were playing with one arm tied behind their backs.
OKAFOR’S DOUBLE DELIGHT
Leeds didn’t wait long to twist the knife. Noah Okafor, the man with the golden touch this season, pounced on a defensive lapse to slot past Senne Lammens for his first.
United showed a pulse just before the break when Matheus Cunha—the bright spark in an otherwise dim performance—drilled home a low equalizer that threatened to blow the roof off the Stretford End. For a moment, it looked like the ten men of Manchester might pull off the impossible.
But Okafor hadn’t read the script. In the 72nd minute, the Swiss star danced through a weary United backline and fired a rocket into the top corner. It was a goal worthy of winning any derby, and it silenced the home crowd into a stunned, bitter peace.
While Leeds boss Daniel Farke celebrated with the travelling fans, Michael Carrick was left scratching his head. Despite having the likes of Bruno Fernandes and Kobbie Mainoo pulling the strings in midfield, United lacked the clinical edge to punish a disciplined Leeds outfit.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin led the line for Leeds with the hunger of a man possessed, while Ethan Ampadu put in a captain’s performance in the heart of the park, snuffing out every attempt at a United comeback.
For United, it’s back to the drawing board. For Leeds, it’s a night that will be toasted in the pubs of West Yorkshire for years to come.
