NEW YORK, United States – The United Nations, UN and the United States have reacted angrily following reports that North Korea has carried out major underground nuclear test.
The test was conducted S
unday even as North media displayed samples of hydrogen bomb that could be put to test at any moment.
“A 5.6 magnitude seismic event, likely a nuclear test, has been detected approximately 10km from North Korea’s nuclear test site. The event was felt in neighbouring northeast China, according to those currently there reporting on social media”, North Korea news reported.
Reacting to the development, President of the United States, Donald j Trump, tweeted, “North Korea is a rogue nation which has become a great threat and embarrassment to China, which is trying to help but with little success.
“North Korea has conducted a major Nuclear Test. Their words and actions continue to be very hostile and dangerous to the United States..
” South Korea is finding, as I have told them, that their talk of appeasement with North Korea will not work, they only understand one thing”,he said on the social media, adding “I will be meeting General Kelly, General Mattis and other military leaders at the White House to discuss North Korea. Thank you”, Trump said, adding that the United States is considering, in addition to other options, stopping all trade with any country doing business with North Korea”, he said.
Trump reacted just as United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has condemned the act as “yet another serious breach of the country’s international obligations.”
According to a statement issued by a UN spokesperson, the Secretary-General also said that DPRK’s action undermined international non-proliferation and disarmament efforts and is also profoundly destabilizing for regional security.
“The Secretary-General reiterates his call on the DPRK leadership to cease such acts and to comply fully with its international obligations under relevant Security Council resolutions,” the statement said, noting that Mr. Guterres remains in contact with all parties concerned.
Also today, the head of the UN atomic agency has said that the nuclear test is “an extremely regrettable act.”
“This new test, which follows the two tests last year and is the sixth since 2006, is in complete disregard of the repeated demands of the international community,” said Yukiya Amano, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), in a statement.
