DOHA, Qatar – France’s young stars booked their spot in the Round of 16 at the Under-17 World Cup with a clinical 2-0 win over a battling Colombia side on the spectacular pitches of the Aspire Zone in Doha.
In a match that highlighted the futuristic feel of this World Cup, the French team put on a performance of professional efficiency at one of the tournament’s most unconventional venues—the world-class training facilities of the Aspire Zone – Pitch 1.
While the scoreline suggests a comfortable outing for the young Les Bleus, the venue itself was a talking point, with the match taking place not in a colossal, packed stadium, but on an immaculate training ground pitch within the sprawling, state-of-the-art Aspire Zone sports complex.
It was a far cry from the roaring crowds of a traditional World Cup fixture, but the French boys certainly weren’t fazed by the atmosphere, or lack thereof! Goals from Valero and Mounguengue sealed the deal, ensuring Colombia’s dream ended right here on the sun-drenched Qatari turf.
Valero broke the deadlock, giving France the lead before the break. Colombia showed heart, pushing forward in the second half, but the French defence, anchored in the familiar confines of the Aspire Zone, stood firm. Pierre Mounguengue then cleared up any lingering doubts with a late strike to make it 2-0.
The result means France’s journey continues in Qatar, putting their earlier mixed group stage results behind them.
For Colombia, it’s the end of the road, but the experience of playing in one of the world’s most impressive training hubs will surely stick with them.
The Aspire Zone, typically the domain of elite athletes honing their craft, proved a successful, if slightly understated, stage for this crucial knockout match.
