TRUMP AND XI VOW TO STEER ‘GIANT SHIP’ AWAY FROM WAR

President Donald Trump of the United States and Xi Jinping, his Chinese counterpart during his visit to China

BEIJING, May 14, 2026 – BY OUR POLITICAL EDITOR

THE WORLD held its breath Wednesday as Donald Trump and Xi Jinping sat down for a high-stakes showdown in Beijing, with the Chinese leader warning that humanity has reached a terrifying “crossroads.”

In a dramatic summit at the Great Hall of the People, President Xi told a nodding Donald Trump that the globe is facing “turbulence” not seen in a century. But in a boost for world peace, the two “strongmen” promised to stop their countries from sinking into a “trap” of total war.

The meeting—the first of four planned for 2026—comes as the “Special Relationship” between the US and China is pushed to the brink by a biting trade war and the looming shadow of the conflict in Iran.

Ditching the usual frosty diplomatic speak, Xi used a colorful metaphor to describe the task ahead. He told the US President: “I look forward to working together with you to set the course and steer the giant ship of China-U.S. relations.”

Xi added that he wants to make 2026 a “historic, landmark year” that finally ends the bickering between the world’s two biggest superpowers.

But it wasn’t all smiles and handshakes. Xi raised the specter of the “Thucydides Trap”—the historical theory that a rising power (China) and an established one (USA) are destined for a bloody collision.

”Can we meet global challenges together and provide greater stability for the world?” Xi asked.

“These are the questions of our times.”
Trump, appearing in his signature red tie, seemed to agree, later telling reporters that he and Xi “have known each other for a long time” and that the Chinese President is a “great leader.”

The stakes couldn’t be higher for British families. With global oil prices wobbling due to the Iran crisis and tech prices sky-high from the trade war, a “Great Deal” in Beijing could mean cheaper petrol and gadgets back in Blighty.

Taiwan: Xi warned that “clashes” are possible if the US keeps meddling in the island’s affairs.

A “Board of Trade”: Trump is pushing for a new deal to stop the tit-for-tat tariffs that have hammered global markets.

To understand why the world is on edge, you have to look at how we got here.

1. The 100-Year Shift
Xi’s mention of “transformation not seen in a century” refers to China’s belief that the era of Western dominance is fading. Since 2024, China has aggressively expanded its influence in the Middle East and the “Global South,” challenging the US-led order.

2. The 2025 Trade War
Last year, relations hit rock bottom when Trump slapped 145% tariffs on Chinese goods. While a “truce” was signed in October 2025, the global economy is still reeling. Today’s talks are a desperate attempt to make that truce permanent.

3. The Iran Factor

With US and Israeli forces currently engaged in strikes against Iranian targets, the world is a powderkeg. China is Iran’s biggest oil customer, making Xi the only man on earth who might be able to whisper in Tehran’s ear and stop a Third World War.

This isn’t a one-off. The leaders are set to meet three more times this year—in Shenzhen, Miami, and Washington. It’s a “marathon, not a sprint” to see who blinks first in the battle for global supremacy.
