Black Friday as mob set trailer load of cows ablaze over death of 8 in Anambra

ONTISHA, Anambra, Nigeria – It was black Friday in Awka, Anambra State capital, as about eight children hawking at Kwata flyover junction in Awka, Anambra State were crushed to death by a trailer carrying cows.
According to an eye witness, the trailer lost control at the junction and rammed into a stretch of nine vehicles at the traffic light, killing eight persons in the process. Irate youths who were angered by the development quickly mobilized and set ablaze the lorry, including the cows.
A source said the accident happened when the truck conveying the cattles to an unknown location lost control while descending the Kwata junction slope, knocking down eight hawkers to death , injuring four occupants of two other SUV cars.
The eye witness however could not say whether the driver and his assistant were killed or not. As at the time of filling this report men of the Anambra state fire service have arrived the scene to extinguish the fire while the solders and the police who had taken over the place fired several gun shots to disperse the irate youths.
The level of the fire was so intensive that our reporter who was at the scene was unable to ascertain if more vehicles were affected by the accident. However the Anambra state Police Command was yet to make a statement on the incident.
At the time of filling the story, it was not clear about the number of cows that were burnt and who the owners were.
