ONITSHA, Anambra, Nigeria – Thugs suspected to be members of opposition party on Saturday destroyed materials meant for ‘Walk For Health’ programme put together by the People Democratic Party PDP aspirant in Anambra’ state ,Mr. Valentine Ozigbo.
Mr. Ozigbo had put together materials for ‘Walk For Health in Nnewi on Friday evening only to wake up on Saturday morning to discover that all materials have been destroyed by unknown people.
However , it was not yet known whether the act was carried out by opposition parties in the state or rival aspirants in PDP. Speaking at the Walk For Health programme, Ozigbo enjoined Anambra’ people to be focused on how to liberate the state and to disregard the distraction by enemies of the state .
He said he is nevertheless focus and determined to bring excellence into governance if elected as the governor as nothing will stop him. He said that no matter the level of hoodlums attacks and destruction of his structure he will overcome them.
Meanwhile the PDP in the state has condemned the action in it’s entirety. The party said it is unacceptable for any group of people to resort to destruction of property of it’s aspirants. In a statement, PDP Publicity Secretary in Anambra State, Mr Nnamdi Nwangwu said Ozigbo had on Saturday morning scheduled his third walk for life programme at DCC Nnewi but some unidentified thugs besieged the venue and destroyed the stage, banners and other materials meant to be used for the health walk.
According to PDP ,the attack is a manifestation of the phobia the opposition political parties are nursing for the PDP governorship aspirants. The party appealed to the law enforcement agencies in the state to properly investigate the matter for the purpose of bringing the perpetrators to book.
“It is a shame that opposition political parties could descend to the abysmal level of destroying materials meant for health programme, the development is most unfortunate and indeed a dangerous precedent. Law enforcement agencies should as a matter of duty step into the matter and arrest the hoodlums and their sponsors. Anambra people are not known for this kind of barbarism.” PDP said .
PDP however declared emphatically that the incident that happened in Nnewi on Saturday morning cannot discourage his party from going ahead with their programmes aimed at taking over the state in the Anambra State governorship election.
The party urged followers to be steadfast and keep faith with the Peoples Democratic Party which is passionately committed to giving the state a responsible government.
