BENIN CITY, EDO STATE — Political tension flared up in Edo State on Tuesday following a violent attack on the New Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) Local Government Secretariat in Ikpoba-Okha.

According to preliminary reports, suspected political thugs allegedly sponsored by the ruling All Progressive Congress, APC invaded the facility and set the building on fire, leaving local residents and party members in a state of panic.

Eyewitnesses in Ikpoba-Okha reported that the attackers stormed the premises unprovoked, damaging office property before setting fire to the main structure.

Smoke from the burning building could be seen across nearby neighborhoods as residents scrambled for safety.

Local officials of the New Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) quickly pointed fingers at suspected thugs allegedly affiliated with the All Progressives Congress (APC), accusing rival political forces of attempting to intimidate party loyalists in the area.

As of the time of filing this report, emergency services and security personnel were reportedly being dispatched to control the blaze and restore order to the volatile area.

Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area, one of the most populous LGAs in Edo South Senatorial District, has historically served as a critical battleground in Edo State politics.

Due to its large voter turnout and strategic proximity to Benin City, the council area frequently experiences heightened political friction during election cycles and party rivalries.

The recent outbreak of political violence reflects ongoing tensions between major political parties across Edo State as factions vie for grassroots dominance ahead of upcoming electoral contests.

Security agencies in Edo State have repeatedly warned political parties and youth groups against acts of arson, ballot disruption, and political violence, cautioning that offenders would face the full wrath of the law.

More details to follow as official responses from the Edo State Police Command and APC leadership are obtained.
