DOHA, QATAR – The Pharaohs of Egypt were sent packing from the Under-17 World Cup today after a disappointing 3-1 loss to a clinical Switzerland side, with the match played out on the lesser-known Aspire Zone – Pitch 5 in Doha.
The modest Qatari venue, one of the eight pitches hosting the tournament’s group and early knockout stages within the vast Aspire Zone complex, failed to provide the inspirational setting Egypt needed for a Round of 32 clash.
Despite the grand spectacle of the World Cup in Qatar, this particular match took place away from the glitz of the major stadiums, a factor that appeared to do no favours for the Egyptian team.
Switzerland’s youngsters, who topped their group, showed supreme composure in the more utilitarian surroundings, dominating large parts of the game. Nevio Scherrer struck first in the 19th minute, silencing the pockets of Egyptian support. Ethan Bruchez then doubled the lead just before the break in the 39th minute.
The Swiss machine continued to hum after the restart. Jill Stiel netted a third on the 58th minute, putting the result beyond doubt and ensuring the journey home for the young Pharaohs.
A late, late consolation strike from substitute Anas Roshdy deep into stoppage time (90+1) was the only bright spot for Egypt, who qualified for the knockout rounds as one of the best third-placed teams.
For Switzerland, the victory on Pitch 5 at the Aspire Zone means they march on to the Round of 16, proving they can handle the pressure and deliver on any stage, however low-key the location.
