KATMANDU, Nepal – Her lordship, Justice Sushila Karki has been sworn in as Interim Prime Minister of Nepal.

Her appointment as Prime Minister makes her the first female Prime Minister in the country.

​Born on June 7, 1952, Karki is a Nepalese jurist, author, and politician who has made history by becoming Nepal’s first female Chief Justice and now its first female interim Prime Minister.

She was appointed to the latter role on September 12, 2025, following a period of political turmoil and protests in the country.

​Karki’s career is marked by a strong anti-corruption stance and a reputation for integrity. She began her legal practice in 1979 in Biratnagar.

In 2009, she was appointed as an ad-hoc judge of the Supreme Court, becoming a permanent judge in 2010.

​Her most notable judicial appointment was as the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Nepal, a position she held from July 2016 to June 2017.

During her tenure, she was known for her bold judgments, including jailing a serving government minister for corruption.

She also presided over cases related to UN peacekeeping missions and the Nijgadh Fast Track project.

​After retiring from the judiciary, she remained an active figure in civil society, often speaking out against corruption and political malpractice.
