ARSENAL left the Riyadh Air Metropolitano with a precious away goal but a sense of “what if” after a pulsating 1-1 draw with Atlético Madrid in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final.

In a night defined by clinical penalties and defensive grit, Mikel Arteta’s men proved they belong on Europe’s grandest stage. But Diego Simeone’s Atleti—led by the ever-dangerous Julián Alvarez—ensured the tie remains on a knife-edge heading back to North London.

All eyes were on Arsenal’s Swedish sensation Viktor Gyökeres, and the big man didn’t disappoint. Just as the first half looked set to end in a stalemate, Gyökeres stepped up to the spot in the 44th minute. Keeping his cool amidst a deafening whistle from the home support, he slammed his penalty home to give the Gunners a dream lead at the break.

However, the “Spider” was waiting to bite back. Julián Alvarez, the man who has transformed Atleti’s attack this season, won and converted his own penalty in the 56th minute. His clinical finish past David Raya restored parity and reminded everyone why Simeone spent the big bucks to bring the World Cup winner to Spain.

It wasn’t just about the goalscorers. Declan Rice was a titan in the middle of the park, covering every blade of grass to stifle Atleti’s creative spark. Behind him, William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhães put on a defensive clinic, limiting the legendary Antoine Griezmann to speculative efforts.

Arsenal fans were given a scare when Bukayo Saka was introduced late from the bench, but the winger looked sharp, nearly carving out a late winner in the dying embers of the game.

A 1-1 draw in the furnace of the Metropolitano is a result most would have snapped your hand off for before kick-off. With the away goal (metaphorically) in their pocket and the Emirates Stadium waiting, the Gunners are slight favorites to reach the final. But as long as Alvarez and Griezmann are on the pitch, Simeone will believe the dream is still alive.
