AWKA, Anambra, Nigeria – Anambra State Governor Prof. Charles Soludo has inaugurated 21 Local Government council area chairmen of the state with charge to work extremely hard to achieve success.
Inaugurating the chairmen on Tuesday at the Government House Agu Awka, Soludo said he would like to congratulate the chairmen and at the same time commiserate with them .
According to him, he was commiserating with them because of the enormous tasks ahead.
” I want to congratulate you because you are called to serve the people of the state . It is all work and service to the people. I can see smiles on your faces and that of your spouses, I know that the smiles may soon fade away because this is a unique one that requires thinking outside the box.
“A call to Public service is a platform to make the difference. Being called to serve at this time is an honour . If you look at your local government councils, you will see hundreds and thousands of people who will be looking up to you for service delivery. You are chosen to change their lives for better” he said .
According to him, the call for service is to enable you make disruptive changes that will trickle down to the local government, wards and communities. He also reminded them, that in most local headquarters, there are lot of challenges ranging from operational vehicles, poor attitude to works among workers and others, noting that they need to put them in order .
“You are called to make a change , disruptive change at this time of humongous service . I know that some of you who have not been to your local government will be disappointed about the situation. You will discover the enormous challenges awaiting you. You may not have roads to your office, no chairs in your office even operational vehicles, but you must be determined to make the necessary changes.
“We will not take excuse for failure. As a member of the Soludo solution team, don’t give excuse for not succeeding, just go there and deliver ” he said . He said that ,the government expected them to touch the lives of the poor village woman there ,the hawker, and others suffering in the various communities to have a feel of government.
He also revealed that the government would come up with a minimum standard for all projects in the state , starting from the local government.
” We will have a minimum standard for planning of our communities ,we must have standard for the construction of our roads ,markets and others. People build on the water drainage and channel water to main roads, without minding the consequences on the system, that must stop and you should help government ” he stated .
He used the opportunity to announce that road construction work would commence at Nzam community; the Headquarters of Anambra West Local government area that has been inaccessible for decades.
Soludo also announced that the issue of revenue collection and generation would be under the office of the Council Chairmen, noting that both the local and state government would fashion out a formula for the sharing of the Internally Generated Revenue in order to empower the local government areas to develop their communities.
“In due time , we shall also give you concepts and ideas of how to discover revenue sources aside from the ones that are already known and when we generate revenue we shall fashion out a formula for sharing it, he said.
