LAGOS, Nigeria – Yesterday turned out to be another black Sunday in Lagos as an unlatched 20 feet container collapsed on danfo bus, leaving at least nine (9) lives dead.

The incident occurred at the regular Ojuelegba bridge, where dozens of residents of Lagos State have lost their lives following continued collapses of unlatched containers on vehicles without any corresponding will by the Lagos State Government to contain this regular malaise in the axis and generally on Lagos roads.

By designs, trucks hauling containers are not permitted to take the bridge  where there is a bypass but due to non compliance, lost of lives continue  following lack of enforcement by the Lagos State Government.

Speaking on the unfortunate incident,  General Manager, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA, Dr. Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu,   the nine individuals who lost their lives  are four adult males, three adult females, a boy and a girl child. He said one adult female rescued alive.

Reporting on the incident, LASEMA said upon arrival at the scene, a truck conveying a 20ft container was found to have landed on top of a commercial bus.

“Further investigations revealed that the bus was picking up passengers when the truck lost control and fell over the side of the bridge.

“After suspending the container load with the aid of the Agency’s forklift and cutting off the top of the bus with light rescue equipment, a single adult woman was extricated alive and taken to the trauma centre. F inal casualty count is 9 fatalities”, he said.

The Agency’s heavy duty Goliath and teams from Onipan and Cappa are on ground. The Agency’s Ambulance, LASG FIRE, FED FIRE, LASTMA and Nigeria Police have been working on this situation which is now concluded.

He said further investigation will be carried out by the Nigeria Police on the removal of the barriers on the bridge aimed at preventing trucks from ascending the bridge.
