LAGOS, Nigeria – Former Prime Minister of Japan, Mr. Shinzo Abe is dead. He died in hospital after being shut multiple times at a campaign rally in the Japanese city of Nara earlier today.
He was delivering a speech ahead of Japan Upper House election on Sunday when he was shot. So far, Japanese police have arrested a 41 year old local for the attack. But it is not clear what his motives were against this man who was well loved in Japan, for his economic reform.
He was 67. Born 21 September, 1954 , Shinzo Abe remains the highest term serving Prime Minister in Japan. He resigned for health reason after serving two terms, 2006 to 2007 and 2012 to 2020.
Until his death, Shinzo Abe was a member of the lower house of parliament.
Speaking during a televised conference from the hospital, officials of the Nara Medical University Hospital said Abe had no vital sign at the time he was brough into the hospital and was bleeding profusely.
He told reporters that two bullets entered his body from the front and that he already had cardiopulmonary arrest at the site where he was shot. He explained that the medical team was able to stop bleeding to some extent but was not enough to stop total bleeding.
Doctors said he was pronounced dead at 5pm shortly after his family arrived the hospital. Doctors identified the immediate cause of his death as trauma.
He said the bullets made two entry points into the body about 5 centimeters deep.
“He had cardiopulmonary arrest when he arrived. Even officials in the ambulance said he was already in a state of cardiac arrest and as he heads to the hospital, he was already in severe state.
“We tried to stop the bleeding and a lot of blood transfusion at the same time”, he said adding that more than 100 units of blood transfusion was used.
“We are not able to confirm the bullets in the body, we did not recognize the presence of any bullet during the treatment”, he said but that there was wound at the back, suggesting exit of the bullets.
“There are two entry wounds to the body, bullets penetrated the skin and went to the heart, the other one hits the artery”, doctors said.
The doctors explained that Abe died due to bleeding and that there was huge trauma to the heart. “There was a big hole, a big injury to the heart due to the bullet entry. The bullet entered the body and cursed trauma and bleeding led to death. Injury on the left shoulder, could be exit of the bullet”, doctors said.
