RYAN SESSEGNON proved once again why he is the darling of the Thames as his clinical predatory strike secured a massive 1-0 victory for Fulham over a shell-shocked Aston Villa.

In a high-stakes encounter at a sun-drenched Craven Cottage, the homegrown star was the difference-maker, reacting quickest in the 43rd minute to fire home after Emiliano Martínez had brilliantly parried a Saša Lukić header. It was the spark the Cottagers needed, ending a three-game goal drought and blowing the race for European qualification wide open.

The match began as a cagey tactical chess match between Marco Silva and Unai Emery. Villa, fresh off a strong run, looked dangerous early on with Ollie Watkins testing Bernd Leno. However, the Fulham defense, marshaled by the indomitable Joachim Andersen, held firm.

The breakthrough came just before the interval. Timothy Castagne whipped in a teasing cross that found Lukić. While Martínez showed why he’s a World Cup winner with a sharp save, he could only push the ball into the path of the oncoming Sessegnon, who made no mistake from close range.

”A massive three points,” Sessegnon told reporters after being named Player of the Match. “We knew this was a must-win to keep competing for something special.”

Unai Emery threw everything at the hosts in the second half, introducing Jadon Sancho, Leon Bailey, and Tammy Abraham in a frantic quadruple substitution. The tactical gamble nearly paid off when Abraham danced past Andersen in the closing stages, but with the goal at his mercy, the former Chelsea man shanked his effort over the bar.

Fulham thought they had doubled their lead when Castagne headed home a corner, but the goal was chalked off after Sander Berge was adjudged to have fouled Martínez.

THE VERDICT

While Villa dominated possession (61%), they lacked the clinical edge to break down a resilient Fulham backline.

For Silva’s men, this wasn’t just a win; it was a statement. As the final whistle blew, the Cottage erupted, knowing that their European dream is very much alive.
