ABUJA – The Nigerian Senate today called on the Nigerian Communication Commission (NCC), telecommunications giant, MTN to halt proposed increment in cost of data with effect from December 1, 2016.

The Senate gave the order following a motion on the floor of the Senate by Deputy Senate Leader, Ibn N’Allah on the plan to raise tariff on data.

The Senate also mandated its Committee on Communication to look into the proposal to avoid cheating Nigerians in the process. The proposal to increase tariff has been met with stiff opposition by Nigerians, including labour unions.

Speaking on the proposal, President of the Senate, Dr. Bukola Saraki said that for the NCC to raise tariff at a time when inflation has gone up to 18.5 percent without consultation is unacceptable.

‘I have seen power of the internet and how it serves to give voice to the voiceless, and a platform for millions to air their views, that is why @ will continue to maintain that access to the internet remains affordable for all Nigerians’’, he said on tweeter.
