ANAMBRA, Nigeria – The Governor of Anambra State, Prof Charles Soludo, has commended the efforts of security agencies in the state, attributing the successful mass return of Ndi Anambra during the recent Christmas season to their dedication and vigilance.
Governor Soludo praised the men and women of the Armed Forces and other security agencies for creating an atmosphere of safety that encouraged residents and indigenes to return home in large numbers during the festive period.
He noted that their tireless commitment played a critical role in restoring confidence and ensuring peace across the state.
The Governor made the remarks when he joined worshippers at St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Awka, during a special Thanksgiving Mass held to mark the 2026 Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day.
According to the Governor’s Press Secretary, Mr. Christian Aburime, the Mass was officiated by the Most Rev. Paulinus Ezeokafor, the Catholic Bishop of the Awka Diocese.
“While we sleep, these men and women are awake. In Anambra, the security agencies have worked extraordinarily hard to keep us safe, and the government will continue to support them in every way possible, subject to available resources.”Governor Soludo remarked.
In a candid reflection on the region’s security challenges, the Governor lamented the loss of innocent lives to criminal elements and domestic “terrorists” operating from forests and bushes within the region.
He, however, commended the Federal Government for officially designating such kidnappers and criminal gangs as terrorists.
“These people involved in kidnapping and violent crimes are our own people,”
“I am glad that the Federal Government has designated them as terrorists. They represent the most potent threat to peace and security in the South East.”Soludo said.
Governor Soludo also highlighted the historical importance of the day, liking it to January 15 marks the official end of the Nigerian Civil War in 1970.He stressed the need for reflection and remembrance.
“Today, we remember not only those who lost their lives during the civil war, but also all the servicemen and women who paid the ultimate price in the service of their fatherland,” he stated.
In his sermon, Bishop Paulinus Ezeokafor drew a profound parallel between the Sacrament of Baptism and military service, explaining that both are rooted in selfless service and the preservation of life.
“Those who surrender themselves to the service of the nation, just like those who commit to baptism, become instruments of God for the salvation and protection of others,” the Bishop said.
Bishop Ezeokafor further urged both the government and the general public to resist the temptation of self-centeredness, emphasizing the need to prioritize the common good and collective responsibility for peace and development.
The Mass which attracted senior government officials, veteran military officers, and families of fallen heroes, served as a solemn reminder of the enormous sacrifices made by members of the Nigerian Armed Forces in safeguarding the nation’s peace, unity, and territorial integrity
