WEST HAMPTON United were denied a precious victory on the south coast yesterday as Georginio Rutter’s injury-time equaliser ensured a share of the spoils for Brighton & Hove Albion in a dramatic 1-1 draw at the American Express Stadium.
The much-anticipated Premier League clash, played out in the brisk sea air of the Amex Stadium in Falmer, just outside the buzzing city of Brighton, was a cagey affair that exploded into life late on.
For much of the match, it looked like the Amex faithful were set to see their side lose, despite their famous stadium—a modern beacon of football on the Sussex Downs—acting as a spiritual fortress for the Seagulls. The ground, with its distinctive curved architecture, saw Brighton dominate possession in the first half but fail to register a single shot on target until the dying moments of the game.
The Hammers, travelling down from London, had their breakthrough in the 73rd minute.
Star man Jarrod Bowen delivered a moment of quality, slotting home a low finish to put the visitors 1-0 up, silencing the majority of the 30,000-plus crowd.
The travelling support in the corner of the Amex went wild, sensing a huge three points on the road. As the clock ticked past 90, and the home crowd prepared for disappointment, the Amex finally found its voice.
A scramble in the West Ham box saw Rutter turn the ball home in the 91st minute, securing a hard-fought point and sparking pandemonium inside the stadium.
The result is a bitter pill for West Ham, who came so close to extending their impressive recent form, but for Brighton, it maintains their excellent recent record at their superb home venue. The Amex remains a tough nut to crack, as David Moyes’ men found out the hard way.
