NORWAY – Katharina Schmid won from team-mate Celina Freitag as Germany claimed a third success from four events contested so far at the opening ski jumping weekend of the season in Norway.

Schmid soared 133.5 and 123 metres on the 1994 Winter Olympics large hill in Lillehammer on Sunday to record a first victory since March 2023, a seventh in Lillehammer and a 16th overall.

Freitag almost stole victory with a big leap of 129m in the second round but narrowly missed out by 2.8 points. Lisa Eder of Austria took third place.

World Cup holder Nika Prevc of Slovenia had to settle for 11th the day after beating Schmid and Freitag for victory.

In a successful season start for the Germans, seven-time world champion Schmid and Freitag won Friday’s mixed team event together with Pius Paschke and Andreas Wellinger, and Paschke won the first men’s event on Saturday.
