KENYAN coaching trailblazer Ruth Jepchumba Bundotich has been crowned the 2025 World Athletics Woman of the Year, landing the prestigious gong for her incredible dedication to developing young female athletes.
Bundotich, a true pioneer in the coaching community, was honoured for her outstanding leadership and commitment to building sustainable pathways for emerging stars in Kenya and beyond.
Her work with Ikaika Sports Agency and Adidas Running has transformed the lives of countless young runners, providing them with the support they need both on and off the track.
Bundotich’s holistic approach is credited with creating the environment that has produced world-beaters, most notably world record-holder Agnes Ngetich.
Ngetich’s spectacular achievements have shone a spotlight on the incredible ecosystem Bundotich has tirelessly built.
A deeply humbled Bundotich said the award wasn’t just for her, but for a whole “village” of committed people.
”I am deeply honoured by this recognition from World Athletics,” she said.
”This acknowledgement reflects not just one athlete’s journey but the collective commitment to nurturing, developing and safeguarding young talents, particularly young girls in athletics.
”While Agnes Ngetich’s achievements, among others, have brought visibility to this work, her success represents something much larger: a collaborative approach to athlete development.
”It takes an ecosystem of committed people to nurture talents responsibly and sustainably. This recognition truly belongs to a village of more than 15 individuals – coaches, support staff, family members and mentors.”
The Woman of the Year Award celebrates individuals who have made an outstanding contribution to the sport, particularly in advancing opportunities for women and girls.
Bundotich becomes the latest in a distinguished line of recipients recognised for driving progress and equity in athletics.
The award is part of the World Athletics Awards 2025, with the main stars, the World Athletes of the Year and Rising Stars, set to be announced at a glitzy ceremony in Monaco this Sunday.
