October 20, 2015 – The Nigerian Senate has scheduled former Governor of Rivers State Hon. Rotimi Amaechi for screening tomorrow Wednesday along with others.
He was scheduled just at the Senate today screened only two ministerial nominees, Mr. Adebayo Shittu and Hon. Kadijat Ibrahim. While Shittu was grilled for over one hour , Ibrahim was simply asked to take a bow and leave in line with rules laid down by the Senate.
This same ritual is expected for the former governor when he appear before the red chamber on Wednesday.
Addressing reporters after the screening exercise, Chairman Adhoc Committee on Media and Buhari Ministerial List, Senator Dino Melaye said Amaechi’s screening was delayed to avoid rancor being a respected Nigerian adding that the Ethics Committee of the House will soon present its report on allegations levelled on the former governor.
Justice George Omereji’s committee had indicted the former governor with a recommendation that Amaechi and his cohorts should made to refund sum of N53 billion taken from the State Reserve Fund.
He said that the Senate has a lot of respect for him as former Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly and two time governor of Rivers State.
He explained that caucus of the All Progressive Congress(APC) met yesterday and resolved to throw their weight behind Amaechi and that the caucus of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is also meeting to rubber stamp the candidate of Amaechi and that there is intense lobbying right now in the red chamber. He added that the former governor will just stroll into the chamber tomorrow.
Amaechi is appearing for screening the same day that the Senate President is billed to appear on trial at the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT)for 13-count charge brought against him by Code of Conduct Bureau(CCB).
Saraki is appearing at CCT on 21, 22 and 23 of October, 2015.
