KADUNA — The superstars were out in full force at the Ranchers Bees Stadium on Monday afternoon, but the goals simply decided to stay in bed.
It was billed as a Nigerian Premier Football League blockbuster. A mouth-watering clash where Finidi George’s high-flying Rivers United rolled into town to show Usman Abdallah’s hard-grafting Ranchers Bees how the big boys play.
Instead, the visiting galacticos left bruised, battered, and begging for the full-time whistle in a breathless 0-0 stalemate that had fans on the edge of their seats.
Rivers United arrived heavily armed with a deadly attacking trio. Mbaoma Chijioke, Alex Oyowah, and Abdulrasheed Dabai possess enough firepower to terrify any defense in the country.
But the “Pride of Rivers” found themselves utterly stifled by a buzzing Bees backline that defended their hive like their very lives depended on it.
If there was ever a day for Rivers’ marquee men to earn their hefty paychecks, this was it. The visitors hogged a whopping 58 per cent of the possession, passing the ball around the sun-baked Kaduna pitch with swagger and intent. But when it came to the crunch?
The killer instinct was completely missing in action.
Mbaoma, so often the talisman for the Port Harcourt giants, cut an isolated figure up top. He was marshaled out of the game by a heroic defensive masterclass from the hosts, led brilliantly by the Bees’ tough-tackling enforcers.
Even when midfield dynamo Oyowah tried to inject some much-needed pace, whipping in dangerous crosses and pulling the strings in the middle of the park, Ranchers simply refused to buckle under the intense pressure.
Let’s talk numbers, because the match statistics tell the true story of a game where sheer dominance didn’t translate into daggers. Rivers United registered an impressive 14 shots over the grueling 90 minutes, yet only a measly four of those managed to test the palms of the Ranchers’ keeper.
On the flip side, the Bees were more than happy to sit deep and sting on the counter-attack. The Kaduna boys managed just 42 per cent of the ball but still conjured up nine attempts on goal, with three strictly on target, proving they were far more than just passengers in this top-flight tussle.
In the middle of the park, it was a proper physical battle that had the roaring crowd demanding more. The referee’s whistle was arguably the busiest man on the pitch, blowing for a combined total of 28 fouls — 15 committed by a frustrated Rivers United and 13 from a gritty Ranchers outfit desperate to disrupt the rhythm.
The visitors also racked up seven corner kicks to the Bees’ three, repeatedly launching the ball into the mixer, only to see it headed clear time and time again by the towering Kaduna defense.
The absolute defining moment of the match came in the 72nd minute, courtesy of a jaw-dropping wonder-save from Rivers United shot-stopper Osagie Onisodumeya. Ranchers’ talisman Jamilu Yusuf found himself in acres of space just inside the penalty box after a blistering, length-of-the-pitch counter-attack.
The striker pulled the trigger, unleashing an absolute rocket destined for the top corner. The home fans were already on their feet, celebrating what looked like a surefire winner.
But Onisodumeya had other ideas. Stretching like a man possessed, the highly-rated keeper tipped the ball onto the crossbar with his fingertips, denying the Bees what would have been a historic scalp. It was a Hollywood save from a keeper proving his undeniable superstar pedigree!
For gaffer Finidi George, it is straight back to the drawing board. His side might have avoided defeat, but dropping points against the plucky underdogs will feel like a bitter pill to swallow for the former Ajax man. You could see the frustration etched on the faces of the Rivers bench as the final seconds ticked away.
For Usman Abdallah and his Ranchers Bees, however, it is a hard-earned point that feels absolutely massive. They proved they belong in the NPFL, matching the heavyweights punch for punch in a gladiatorial clash. Midfield engines Zilkifilu Rabiu and Samson Marvelous ran themselves into the ground, covering every single blade of grass to ensure the Port Harcourt invaders didn’t leave with the loot.
While the goalless scoreline might scream “bore draw” to the casual observer scrolling through the results, anyone inside the Kaduna Township Stadium knows the real truth. It was a tactical war, a clash of pure grit versus sheer glamour, and a stark reminder that in the unforgiving world of the Nigerian top flight, reputations mean absolutely nothing when you cross that white line.
The superstars were out in force. But on this sizzling Monday afternoon in Kaduna, it was the working-class heroes who shone the brightest.
