JOHANNESBURG, South Africa — Ten groundbreaking companies are set to receive a total of $2 million from the Milken Institute and the Motsepe Foundation, following their selection as semifinalists for the Milken-Motsepe Prize in AI and Manufacturing.

Each of the chosen teams, all of which are revolutionizing next-generation manufacturing solutions in Africa, will immediately receive $50,000 in unrestricted funding.

The prize aims to identify and support companies that are leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) and other advanced technologies to drive inclusive economic growth and sustainable development across the continent. With AI projected to add nearly $3 trillion to Africa’s economy by 2033, the initiative is well-positioned to foster significant innovation.

Pioneering Innovations on Display
The 10 semifinalists will showcase their innovations at the Milken Institute Middle East and Africa Summit in Abu Dhabi on December 4–5, 2025.

These companies were selected for their scalable solutions, proven track records, and commitment to job creation and workforce development.

“By focusing on AI and manufacturing, this award identifies and supports visionary teams transforming industry with advanced technologies, which has a multiplying effect by creating economic opportunity for communities across Africa,” said Dr. Emily Musil, managing director at the Milken Institute.

The prize offers more than just capital; it provides a global platform for visibility, mentorship, and investor connections.

Meet the Innovators

The semifinalists represent a diverse range of sectors, from waste management to clean energy and healthcare. For instance, BleagLee, a company from Cameroon, uses AI to turn plastic, agricultural, and electronic waste into high-value recycled materials.

In South Africa, DataProphet provides industrial intelligence solutions that help manufacturers optimize their production processes. Another notable semifinalist, Freshpack Technologies from Tanzania, is tackling food waste with AI-powered cold-storage solutions designed for informal markets.

The Road to the Grand Prize

At the December summit, the semifinalists will pitch their innovations to a panel of expert judges and investors, who will evaluate their commercial viability, operational economics, and scalability in the African market. Five finalists will then be chosen to advance.

The competition will culminate in the awarding of a $1 million Grand Prize at the 2026 Milken Institute Global Conference in Los Angeles. A $250,000 runner-up prize and a $100,000 award for the “Most Advanced Use of Fourth Industrial Revolution Technologies” will also be distributed, recognizing the significant impact these innovations are poised to make.
