PEP GUARDIOLA’S European dreams were turned into a blue-moon nightmare as Vinicius Junior’s double-act ensured Real Madrid didn’t just knock Manchester City out—they slammed the door and bolted it shut.
The Etihad was primed for one of those “I was there” nights, but the script was shredded after just 20 minutes of madness. Bernardo Silva, usually the coolest head in Manchester, saw red—literally—after a desperate goal-line handball to stop a certain Vinicius Junior goal.
Referee Francois Letexier didn’t blink. Red card for Silva. Penalty for Real.
While the Etihad erupted in fury, Vinicius Jr stepped up with ice in his veins. The Brazilian, who has been the pantomime villain for City fans since Rodri’s Ballon d’Or snub, sent Gianluigi Donnarumma the wrong way to effectively end the tie before the first Bovril was served.
City, down to ten men and trailing by four on aggregate, refused to lie down. Jeremy Doku was a whirlwind on the flank, and just before the break, he found Erling Haaland. The Norwegian powerhouse did what he does best, poking home from close range to give the home crowd a flicker of hope. 1-1 on the night. The comeback was on—or so we thought.
COURTOIS THE WALL
The second half was a relentless siege. City threw the kitchen sink, the plumbing, and the Etihad turf at the Spaniards. Haaland went close again, but Thibaut Courtois proved why he is the ultimate Champions League gatekeeper. The Belgian giant pulled off a string of world-class saves, most notably a fingertip stop to deny a thumping Rodri effort.
Pep rolled the dice, switching to a frantic 5-1-3 formation. Doku thought he’d leveled the aggregate when he slotted home, only for the linesman’s flag to kill the noise. Rayan Ait-Nouri also had a goal chalked off for offside as the clock ticked down.
With City pushed so far forward they were practically in the stands, Madrid struck the killer blow in stoppage time. Aurelien Tchouameni whipped in a peach of a cross, and there was Vinicius Jr again, ghosting in at the back post to flick home his second of the night.
He celebrated with a pose that screamed “King of Europe,” leaving City to lick their wounds and turn their focus to Sunday’s EFL Cup final against Arsenal. For Madrid, the quest for a 16th crown goes on.
