Islamabad, February 29, 2016 – Mumtaz Qadri , a Muslim fanatics, working as police bodyguard who killed his boss, a former governor of Punjab, Salman Tasser in Islamabad, Pakistan has been hanged.
Qadri shot his former boss over his opposition to blasphemy laws, government officials have said.
Qadri, who was trained as an elite police commando, was assigned to Taseer as his bodyguard. He is reported to have shot the politician in broad daylight at an Islamabad market in January 2011 and was sentenced to death later that year.
He is reported to have claimed it was his religious duty to kill the governor, who was an outspoken critic of Pakistan’s harsh blasphemy laws and supported liberal reforms.
While the death of Salman Taseer came as a shock to many, Islamic groups continued to hail him as a hero.
Local media reported that his execution engendered protest in Islamabad, forcing government to draft security forces to the streets and places close to Qadri’s home.
