MOSCOW – Russian President Vladimir Putin and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke by phone on Modi’s 75th birthday, with Putin extending well-wishes and praising India’s economic progress and independent foreign policy. The conversation, which also touched on the war in Ukraine, confirmed Putin’s upcoming visit to India in December.
According to a readout from the Kremlin, Putin congratulated Modi, wishing him “good health, prosperity and further success in his service to the nation.”
The Russian president highlighted India’s “independent, sovereign policy” and its “impressive economic results” under Modi’s leadership.
Putin emphasized the longstanding friendly relations between Russia and India, stating that their strategic partnership has enjoyed support in both countries.
He specifically acknowledged Modi’s “considerable personal contribution” to strengthening the bond between the two nations.
In addition to the birthday pleasantries, the leaders discussed preparations for Putin’s visit to India, which is scheduled for December.
The two also addressed several international issues, including the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
The call and confirmed visit underscore the continued close ties between Moscow and New Delhi, despite international pressure on India to distance itself from Russia over the war.
The two nations have maintained a strategic partnership for decades, built on defense, energy, and economic cooperation.
