January 14, 2016 – A coalition of civil society groups, today marched on the Lagos State House of Assembly protesting continued dis-obedience to court orders by President Muhammadu Buhari and his refusal to adhere to the rule of law.
The protesters, numbering just about two dozens, armed themselves with placards with messages such as of “Say no to disobedience to court order and impunity; obey the rule of law, say no to rule of fear; let there be strength in justice; disobedience to court order is state of anarchy; Enough to corruption and impunity; stop the corruption in the judiciary now; Nigerians are yet to see the change; Buhari, what you did in 1984 is what you are doing now in 2016”, among others.
In their letter to President of the Senate, Dr. Bukola Saraki, the group demanded for commencement of impeachment proceeding against President Buhari if he continues to disregard court orders and rule of law.
The letter signed by Innocent Agbo for Human Rights Defenders and Advocacy Centre(HDAC), Dandy Eze for Paths of Peace Initiative, Comrade Popoola for Committee for Defence of Human Rights, Emmanuel John for Concern Nigerians and Centre for Democratic Rights Derivatives, the group said they are demanding for impeachment of Buhari for several reasons among which is the utterance of Buhari during the media chat that those granted bail by the court will not be released based on his conviction of the gravity of the offence they committed and not based on the rule of law.
They also cited continued detention of some people, among which is for National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki in lieu of court order and continued detention of Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party, Chief Olisa Metuh by Department of State Security(DSS), stressing that it is a call to anarchy and violation of chapter 4, section 36, subsection 4 and 5 and subsection 9 of the constitution.
They argued that the President is a product of constitution and must comply with court orders within two weeks.
