LAGOS, Nigeria – The Lagos State Police command says it has arrested 23 thugs with respect to the violence and threats that trailed the February 25, 2023, presidential and national assembly elections.
Public Relations Officer of the police command, SP David Hundeyin, who was speaking on Arise News said those arrested are now with the state criminal investigation department, SCID adding that investigation will be swift and that when completed they will be arraigned for trial.
He said more arrests will be made when there are videos and more evidence to warrant arrest. He said the police responded to distress calls in some of the affected polling units but that the team arrived late at Mafolokwu but that in other areas, the police responded and restored normalcy.
He said there were issues in 20 poling units, but that election was free and fair in other units in the state. He said the armed policemen will get closer to poling units in the March 11, governorship election but that leaders of political parties should do more to reign in their supporters.
‘’I want to reach out to the political class to reach out to their supporters not to resort to violence’’, he said
On conduct of policemen during the election, he said the police is gathering facts on the election and that the political and electoral units at the FCID is gathering these facts and officers culpable will be dealt with.
On attack on traders at Mandilas, he said policemen are there now, to quell uprising but that the market associations decided among themselves not to open shop on Sunday after the election and today.
