February 6, 2015 – Presidential elections scheduled for February 14, 2015 will hold as scheduled, the Federal Government has said.

The decision to go ahead with the election was arrived at during the Council of State meeting held in Abuja on Thursday. Among those in attendance was the Presidential candidate of the All Progressive Congress(APC), General Muhammadu Buhari, who was attending the meeting after abstaining for a very long time.

Former Nigerian Head of State Chief Olusegun Obasanjo was said to be absent. Others attended including serving governors.

The meeting lasted for about seven hours after which Governor of Imo State, Owelle Rochas Okorocha briefed the press.

He said council was of the view that the election should hold as scheduled.
“It was one of an unusual Council of State meeting that took over 7 hours deliberating on a very sensitive issue as to whether INEC is prepared for the elections or not and whether there is need for the change of dates of these elections.

“INEC has said they are very ready to conduct these elections and the security agencies have shown concerns about certain local governments where they have security challenges”, he said.
