December 30, 2014 – There was heavy gun battle overnight in Banjul, capital of Gambia around the presidential palace between rebels and officers of the Presidential Guard.
Although government sources have denied reports of an attempted coup, a diplomat told Reuters that an unknown gunmen had attacked State House during the night.
Local media say President Yahya Jammeh was away either in France or Dubai, when the rebels attacked the Presidential Palace.
The Presidential Guards however succeeded in repelling the attacks from the rebels.
Jammeh has ruled Gambia in the last 20 years after he ascended the throne at the age of 29.
