BERLIN – German sports car manufacturer Porsche AG started off the year with a significant sales increase, selling 80,767 cars worldwide, the company said on Monday.

This was 18% more than over the same period a year earlier. In China, the most important market, sales were up 21%. “The good start makes us confident for the rest of the year,” said sales director Detlev von Platen. The carmaker made gains in all regions, despite what von Platen described as continued limitations on the availability of certain parts.

In Europe (excluding Germany), the company, in which the Wolfsburg-based Volkswagen Group holds a majority stake, delivered around 14% more vehicles to customers. In Germany, the increase was 19%.

SUV models continue to be particularly popular with Porsche customers: Porsche sold 30% more of the Macan compact SUV and 23% more of the Cayenne model.

The all-electric Taycan, however, sold slightly less, with a drop of 3% to 9,152 cars.
