BREMEN – The three-way left-green coalition that has ruled the German city-state of Bremen for the past four years is to continue in office.
The coalition is to carry on under Mayor Andreas Bovenschulte of the Social Democrats (SPD), the parties announced on Sunday.
The new coalition deal, hammered out by the SPD, the Greens and the hard left Left Party, is to be presented on Monday, SPD party sources said. The three parties are to hold separate conferences next weekend to approve the deal.
Bremen’s new senate, the executive body in Germany’s smallest state, is to be elected at the start of July.
In the May 14 state elections, the SPD saw a considerable increase in support to 29.8% of the vote, while the Greens lost ground to 11.9%, and the Left Party maintained its share at 10.9%.
The coalition is the only one of its kind in Germany’s 16 states. The state is made up of Bremen itself and the smaller Bremerhaven at the mouth of the Weser River.
